LECTURES
Week 1-Typo_0_Introduction Summary of my lecture here.

Design necessitates aesthetic training. As a specialized discipline, it undoubtedly possesses its own research subject matter. Conversely, the evident interplay between design and the politics, culture, and art of a particular society imparts design with a distinctive ideological hue. A significant disparity still exists between European and Asian design, with the Renaissance marking an immense leap forward for European design. Typography assumes a pivotal role in design and pervades everyday life ubiquitously. All products we utilize incorporate typography, while typography education profoundly influences how information is perceived and comprehended across all media platforms. This fundamental skill is indispensable for any aspiring designer as good typography holds paramount importance in educational materials; conversely, inadequate design can impede comprehension and hinder students' learning experience.

The content of this class is basically about the origin and changes of Arabic characters and mainly explains the understanding of text typesetting in different periods

The first writing, when people scratched wet clay with sharp sticks or carved in stone, was not writing. For nearly two thousand years, the form of capital letters has been constantly changing, the only form of letters that can be seen evolved from these tools and materials, the form of capital letters is essentially a simple combination of lines and circles, because there are early materials and tools needed to write, through the change of tools can see the continuous evolution of writing. Through the evolution of the text on the picture

A writing style called Bosco, whose text is read alternately from left to right, is not only the way of reading but also the way of writing is reverse, and the marble carving is also very exquisite

Marble carving is also very difficult, there are places where the word carving is too thick or too fine will make the whole marble scrapped, so writing on the marble is a difficult thing, so from these marbles and tools to let later generations better understand the origin of the word

The picture above shows the evolution of the letter A over almost a thousand years

Different periods of fonts have different places, which provides a certain basis for the variety of fonts in subsequent texts. Moreover, the continuous evolution of texts has found many problems, which bring difficulties in reading and cognition, so the emergence of lowercase letters. Charlemagne, the first man to unify Europe since the Romans, issued a decree in 789 to standardize all classical texts, a task he entrusted to Alcuin of York, and the monks of St. Martin rewrote the text using upper and lower case punctuation, setting the standard for calligraphy for a century, a remarkable achievement in the evolution of writing

Gutenberg's best was basically a famous inventor who invented the so-called modern printing press, the printing press, a man who, according to the business, was well versed in engineering metalsmithing and chemistry, and he orchestrated them all to make pages that accurately mimics the manual work of scribes. Gutenberg's printing press democratized access to written knowledge, transforming social communication and literacy. The advent of printing was a great advance in the history of writing

The most obvious is that at the beginning of religious inheritance, most of the characters were written on animal skin, which was very expensive, so it was difficult to spread widely. The appearance of printing greatly changed this situation

There were several important people in the history of writing who organized the text and added their own ideas to make it more unified

Fundamentals of typography

Understand font height, capital letter height and drop and font So the space between vertices above the vertices is called a fork, while the space between letters is diagnosed as a stroke of the letter K, is called a fork, so the down line is anything below the baseline, the ball can be open or closed, when designing a font, sometimes these glyphs must be considered, You have to create an F eye and an F other glyphs, so that when they're typed together, you don't have this proximity or this clash between the top and the stem stroke or the dot end, and what was shown earlier was a hyphen, okay, that's called a link loop, and what was shown earlier was a hyphen, okay, that's called a link loop and that creates a letter with vertical pressure, So away from the pressure to replicate the diagnosis,

The implementation of the font contains more than 26 letters to numbers and some punctuation, the end of the story is the end of the individual strokes without serifs, which is a catch-all term, the font series is really first of all a series with many different faces, many different fonts, such as bold, regular, extended, semi-bold, etc. The font refers to the individual thickness of the strokes, So now when we talk about full fonts here

Recognizing the components of various strokes and letter forms can enhance one's ability to design and evaluate typefaces to make more informed printing choices. Choosing a font family with multiple fonts provides flexibility for design projects, allowing for a cohesive visual language between different text elements.

Adjust the spacing between letters to achieve visual harmony. Kerning is crucial for typography, as it ensures that letters are properly spaced to produce visual effects. Designers must learn to adjust the kerning of specific letter pairs to avoid awkward spacing and improve the overall aesthetic.

Add Spaces between letters to improve clarity and readability. While uppercase letters typically benefit from increased spacing, lowercase letters usually do not, as they rely on proximity for identification.

Different alignment styles (left, center, right, both ends) serve different purposes. For example, left alignment is usually the most readable, while center alignment is visually appealing but can affect readability.

Designers should be careful when using capital letters, as they often require additional kerning adjustments to avoid visual clutter, making the final product more refined.

Choosing a font isn't just a matter of personal preference, it's also about understanding the message a font conveys and making sure it fits the content. Testing fonts in context helps you make informed decisions.

Affect the reading difficulty of the text; Balance is key. It is crucial to strike a balance between artistic expression and readability. Designers must consider how their choices affect the reader's experience and the message conveyed.

The concept is to think of points C and R as a pair of eye organs, while Y represents the crying mouth.

CLIMB
The M, as well as the overall structure, conveys a sense of upward progress.

SLEEP
Assume L is the base, e is the cushion, and e is the occupant.

SWIRL
The whole object is rotated to enhance its intended appearance.

TASK 1 / Exercise 2 – Text Formatting

FEEDBACK

WEEK 2

I spent a long time in the design of the sketch, and did not grasp the meaning of the words themselves in the design at the beginning

WEEK 5

In the layout of the font spacing they find a suitable font interval and constantly adjust and finally have the work appeared

REFLECTION

The experience I gained from Task 1 was both enjoyable and enlightening. Despite taking this module as a free elective, I firmly believe that typography holds significant importance in various aspects of life, which is why I approached this module with utmost sincerity. Personally, the first exercise resonated with me more as it allowed for a myriad of interpretations to express the given word within our limitations, making it feel more personal. However, creating unique designs that differentiate themselves from others while conveying the same words can be quite challenging. On another note, my familiarity with Illustrator and InDesign made it effortless for me to navigate through either application. Moreover, my physical presence in class added to the overall enjoyment of the experience.

Further Reading

  • The provided text appears to be excessively long and contains numerous repetitions and filler content, making it challenging to extract any coherent or specific information. A concise summary cannot be provided due to the lack of clear topics or themes.

  • The sheer volume of text can overwhelm readers, making it difficult to engage with any specific ideas.
  • The absence of focused themes leaves readers uncertain about the primary purpose of the text.
