1.INSTRUCTIONS

2.LECTURES
week5

The lecture delved deeply into the core role of "perception and organization" in advanced typesetting design, with a particular focus on how to effectively guide readers' visual navigation and information interpretation through methods such as contrast, form, structure, texture, direction, and color. Emphasizing contrast not only enhances the discrimination of information but also promotes visual impact.
Gestalt Theory emphasizes that the whole is greater than the part and holds that when we experience things, we perceive them as a unified whole rather than breaking down each small part separately.

1. In design (especially in layout and layout), although the functions of individual elements are important, it is the overall coordination and unity that determine the final effect of the design.

The design needs to focus on the overall visual effect and the collaborative relationship among various elements.

Main organizational principles:
  • Similarity
  • Proximity
  • Closure
  • Continuity
2. Visual contrast is the core tool for distinguishing information and establishing a sense of hierarchy, and it includes seven types:
  • Size
  • Weight
  • Form
  • Structure
  • Texture
  • Direction
  • Colour
3.Examples of comparison and conflict
  • Effective Contrast
       Didot + Lato Light
The font styles are significantly different, the visual layers are clear, and the information is clearly distinguished.
  • Conflict
       Didot + Deming
The font styles are similar but not distinguishable enough, causing visual conflicts and dyslexia.
  • Too Similar
       Didot + Constantia
The two serif fonts are too close, lacking the necessary contrast and reducing the sense of information layering and reading efficiency.

4.Summary
  • Contrast is the cornerstone of information differentiation. Effectively utilizing various contrast techniques (such as size, thickness, color, etc.) can enhance the readability of information.
  • Use colors scientifically to avoid confusion caused by improper color matching and enhance visual layers.
  • Gestalt theory guides holistic thinking, focuses on the overall visual effect, and creates a coherent and logical information flow.
  • The layout form determines the visual appeal and communication effect, balancing aesthetics and functionality.
  • Organizational principles effectively guide readers' reading paths and understanding sequences, enhancing the user experience.
  • Incorrect comparison/organization can lead to dyslexia, reduce the effect of information transmission, and even cause misreading.
  • The sense of social responsibility of designers cannot be ignored. Layout design is not only an artistic expression but also an important bridge for knowledge dissemination and public understanding.
3.TASK

I made a mind map based on my hobbies, strengths and weaknesses, and the things I like, and started to create the following tasks according to it.

When creating this "GYLFX" text pattern, I first used AI software to create a new document and selected the appropriate canvas size. Next, select the text tool from the left toolbar, enter "GYLFX", and then adjust the font (choose this tough and simple style font) and font size in the character panel to make the text size fit the canvas.

4.FEEDBACK
week5

General Feedback
During this week, Mr. Vinod reminded the class to complete their workmarks and prepare a black-and-white presentation board before Week 6. Additionally, we were instructed to select a color palette and take a black-and-white portrait to create a poster featuring our own workmark.

Specific Feedback

My work still needs further improvement. I redesigned my assignment.

week6

General Feedback
This week, Mr. Vinod reviewed each student’s Key Artwork in detail, highlighting areas that needed improvement and offering specific feedback and revision suggestions. He also emphasized the importance of completing all components of Task 2A and encouraged us to begin preparing for Task 2B.

Specific Feedback

Mr. Vinod pointed out that keeping the font of the text as thick as possible can achieve a better visual effect.

week7

General Feedback
Mr. Vinod reminded us to keep progressing with Task 2B and to refine and complete the full set of materials for Task 2 in the coming week.

Specific Feedback

Mr. Vinod suggested expanding my logo into collateral materials and choosing product images that match my style for practical application.

5.REFLECTIONS

Experiences:

In Task 2, I mainly focused on personal identity and emotional expression to create a font art piece. I created this assignment based on the name of my game, attempting various schemes, adjusting the smoothness and consistency of the strokes, and optimizing the overall visual effect. I also attempted to apply the design to real objects.

Observations:

Even when designing fonts with a free expression style, structure is still very important. The consistency of stroke thickness and meticulous layout are of great help to the overall harmony. When actually used in products, contrast, proportion and readability will become even more important. Furthermore, fonts are not only used to convey information, but also serve as symbols for emotional expression and personal display.

Findings:

This project enabled me to understand the important balance between creativity and standardization in font design and learned to tell personal stories through visual language. Through the application in different scenarios, the understanding of brand expression and visual communication has been deepened. Font design has also become a powerful way to express emotions and identities.

6.FURTHER READING

This article comprehensively introduces the basic theories and practical skills of computer typesetting, aiming to help designers and ordinary users improve the reading effect and aesthetics of text typesetting.

The article first emphasizes that the primary goal of typesetting is "readability", rather than merely pursuing aesthetics or the uniqueness of the font.

The content covers the following core points:

Font classification (serif typeface, sans-serif typeface, monospaced typeface, decorative typeface, handwritten typeface) and their application scenarios;

Font style and family, basic layout parameters (font size, line spacing, spacing, etc.) setting principles;

Text spacing adjustment (character spacing, character spacing, line spacing, baseline grid alignment) and paragraph format (alignment method, paragraph spacing, indentation, orphan/widow line handling);

Special style application (underline, small capitalization, superscript/subscript, hyphen and dash);

Standard operations for text boxes, tabs, and style Settings.

Furthermore, at the end of the article, the layout functions in Adobe's main design software are compared and explained, reminding readers of the importance of mastering standardized layout to achieve the effect of accurate information transmission and visual comfort.

The entire article combines rich examples and illustrations to make the theory easier to understand and convenient for practical operation.

  • Emphasize that the most important goal of layout is the readability of information, rather than a fancy appearance or extreme personalization.
  • Font classification is further divided into serif fonts (including old, modern and square serif), sans-serif fonts, decorative fonts, handwritten fonts, monospaced fonts and dingbats, etc.
  • The font style (bold, italic, etc.) should use the true style provided by the font to avoid font distortion caused by software forging bold or italic.
  • 3The font family includes multiple font weights and italic variations. Reasonable combination of members of the same font family can enhance design unity.
  • 4The font size and line spacing Settings should take into account the x height of the font, the age of the audience, the reading distance and the column width, and be adjusted reasonably to improve readability.
  • Detailed typesetting techniques, including kerning, tracking, baseline grid alignment, paragraph indentation, and orphan and widow line processing, can all significantly improve typesetting quality.
  • The Style function integrates multiple format Settings to enable rapid batch modification and global adjustment, thereby enhancing editing efficiency.
  • The layout panels of three software, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, are introduced. It is pointed out that style management should be used as much as possible to improve the standardization and consistency of layout.
