PROJECT 2

Instructions:

My wireframe:

The process on Figma:
For this project, I first analyzed the current structure of the Scottish tartan skirt registration website. The focus of my redesign is to simplify the navigation, improve the information hierarchy structure, and create a more attractive interface.

  • On the homepage, I reorganized the content to place greater emphasis on important functions, such as the "Registration" area and the search function. The layout has been cleaned up to provide a smoother browsing experience.
  • The new grid page has been redesigned with a clearer structure to help users easily browse the recently added entries. Use table format to enhance readability and make updates easier to manage.
  • The grid detail page now presents information in a more user-friendly and visually balanced way. The key parts are given priority and unnecessary visual confusion is removed to help users focus on the basic content.

Introduction to the Prototype:
Main characteristics of the prototype
The new design introduces an updated visual language while maintaining the cultural integrity of the original site. The homepage now has a more prominent hero section and simplified navigation.

The new grid page provides a well-structured layout, allowing users to easily access the latest content added to the registry.

The grid detail page has been improved to present information in a more accessible way, enhancing the readability of historical and registration details.

Key design decisions:
  • During my tenure at Figma, I focused on several key design elements:
  • A neutral and understated color palette that supports traditional content
  • A clear layout hierarchy contributes to readability
  • Modular layout enhances response capability and adaptability
  • Subtle interaction elements (such as hover states and consistent navigation) to enhance usability

These changes are aimed at providing a more modern user experience without compromising the historical significance of the archives.

The meeting redesigned the goals
The new prototype successfully addresses the main goals of the redesign: enhancing visual clarity, improving usability, and supporting intuitive navigation.

It simplifies the user experience, making it easier for visitors to explore, search and learn about the registered cells. Furthermore, it enhances mobile compatibility and makes the design more in line with modern web standards.

FEEDBACK

week9:

Compared with the initial version, my current prototype is more exquisite and the visual effect has also been improved. However, there are still areas that need further improvement.

The professor pointed out that the images on the same page should be kept as horizontally aligned as possible. Furthermore, he suggests that the text content on the left and right sides should avoid crossing or overlapping, as this would make the page look messy and difficult to read.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
This project has provided valuable experience in balancing cultural content with modern design principles. Working in Figma enables me to quickly create prototypes and conduct effective iterations based on tests and feedback.

Observation
I have noticed that even minor adjustments in layout or interaction can significantly improve the user experience. When dealing with detailed archival materials like tartan, maintaining a clean structure and providing sufficient space for the content are key.

Discovery
Through this redesign, I have learned the importance of putting user needs at the center of the design process. Whether users are researchers, designers or ordinary visitors, websites should provide a direct and pleasant browsing experience.
